Ride the Hidden Valleys
A hidden ride through the moors in the Southern Beacons. Our loop takes us up to the Chartist cave with long reaching views to Pen y Fan.. This ride is suitable for anyone with some off road experience. Blue trails are a minimum. Ability to ride 25km is more important than skill. Ebikes are welcome.
This is a great offpiste ride, it's a big day but not huge. We will provide fuel (cake), guidance, skills, and fabulous views.
The route will begin with a climb from up Llangynidr on an old drovers road up high above the Usk Valley. After a brief minor road section, we head up though an old quarry complex which takes us gradually up and out onto Mynydd Llangynir, where a network of undulating horse trails will lead us across the moors to the ellusive Chartist Cave, with its tales of rebellion. From here its downhill to another quarry complex, where we take in great views of Pen y Fan and the other central Beacons summits. After the quarries we join an old byway that leads to a wonderful mountain pass at Bwlch Glascwm, we then head down hill towards the Talybont Reservoir, however, we will then keep our height & transit to the base of Tor y Foel. The final climb may require a bit of a push, but you will be rewarded with views of Llangors Lake and then an endless grassy descent back to the valley floor. A quick pedal along the canal will take us back to the start and an optional visit to the nearby Red Lion pub.

Meet your hosts

We will meet Llangynidr Carpark opposite the village hall at 10am to ride by 10:30. Here will do a thorough bike check and answer questions about the ride.
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water as there is no where to stop for snacks once we start riding.
There will definitely be flapjacks… and maybe cake if time allows for my baking hat to get on before the ride.
